Heritage Plaque Program

Do you have a historic home in Erin? Do you want to display its history with pride?

The Town of Erin is offering heritage plaques to help recognize the history of qualifying local homes.

This program is separate from the Town of Erin’s heritage designations under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The goal of the Heritage Plaque Program is to highlight the historical significance of these buildings and increase public awareness about them.  Properties don’t need to be on the Town’s heritage register to qualify for the plaque program, as the Town of Erin Heritage Committee will consider each application by the building’s history.

Applicants are required to send in the history of ownership for the property, identifying when it was built, as well as the original owner and their occupation.  Qualifying properties should generally be over 100 years old, and if recognized, would promote the community’s history.

Homeowners are encouraged to research their property’s history at the Wellington County Museum and Archives, where staff can assist in finding historic tax records, land indexes, census data, newspaper articles, literature and other information about families who lived in the area.

This supporting information is important to help the Heritage Committee verify the property's history.

Once approved, the homeowner will receive a plaque approximately 12-by-18 inches, with a white background and black mitered edges. See below for an example of the plaque.

Applicants are required to fill out the Heritage Plaque Program application form and pay a $125 fee to cover the cost of the plaque and administration. For more information about the program, see Erin's Heritage Plaque Program Policy.
